Unless it’s a major multiplayer FPS or sporting game franchise where release dates are often more important than quality or originality, a single-player focused AAA video game title which promises something great is bound to undergo at least one delay in the lead up to its release.

Thus the inevitable has happened today. Rockstar Games has officially pushed back “Red Dead Redemption 2” from ths Fall to Spring 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Here’s the official statement they’ve just released:

This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.

We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready. We are really excited to bring you more details about the game this summer. In the meantime, please enjoy this selection of new screenshots from the world of Red Dead Redemption 2.

When is the Red Dead Redemption 2 release date?

Red Dead Redemption 2 release date: Spring 2018

On 18 October 2016 Rockstar Games took to social media to confirm that Red Dead Redemption 2 would be released in 'Fall 2017'. It has also said a trailer would be released on Thursday (20 October) at 11am EST - though note that some retailers like Gameseek have mistakenly taken that as the game's release date, albeit with small print saying it might change.

However, Rockstar has since announced that the game's upcoming release has been pushed back from Autumn 2017 to Spring 2018. Rockstar explained that, since Red Dead Redemption 2 is the first game build solely for the current generation of consoles, "some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience."

We're all waiting for more information on Red Dead Redemption 2 and it seems that the game might make an appearance at E3 2017 in June. Take-Two Interactive (the parent company of Rockstar) is listed as a participating company so we hope we'll hear more about the hyped game in Los Angeles.

Following this, a recent Denuvo leak has led to rife speculation that the game will be coming to PC, despite no mention of the platform during the announcement.

Why? Denuvo, a company that handles anti-tamper technology for PC games, was hacked recently and amongst the leaked documents was a list of developers that had planned (or are currently planning) to use the company as DRM protection.

Of course, amongst this list was Red Dead Redemption 2 developer Rockstar. While many suggest this was for GTA 5, Rockstar ended up opting for Steam's own DRM protection technology. So, is the listing from before Rockstar decided to opt for Steam's DRM protection, or could it be for the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2?

Based on PC sales of GTA 5, we'd suggest that the company is making a PC variant, but until Rockstar officially announces support, nobody can say for sure

What can we expect from Red Dead 2 gameplay?

Take-Two CEO, Strauss Zelnick, has commented on the success of the trailer saying the firm didn't expect it to get so many views adding that the game will offer "incredible emotional depth" with "great story elements and great gameplay elements."

"The conventional wisdom was of course that a western wouldn't work," Zelnick said about the first game to Gamespot. "We took a different point of view, which is that very occasionally westerns capture the imagination of the public. When we launched Red Dead, it did. And those times were right for that. And I think the times are right for a big, sprawling, optimistic view of America again--and that's not meant to be cute."

Red Dead Redemption 2 will have some kind of an online mode, though this has yet to be detailed like most other elements.

Take-Two CEO discusses RDR2 multiplayer during earnings call

Despite GTA Online proving extremely successful for Rockstar parent company Take-Two, questions during the most recent earnings call were directed at the multiplayer experience of the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2. More specifically, investors were curious to see whether Take-Two believed that RDR2's online mode would compete with GTA Online, with CEO Strauss Zelnick believing that it won't be the case.

“I’m fond of saying entertainment is an unusual animal. And that entertainment properties don’t really compete with other entertainment properties and that you never need entertainment,” he said. “Entertainment is something that you want to have, but it’s not a need to have. If nothing in the market appeals to you at some time, there’s no reason to go and get it. And if multiple things appeal to you, avid consumers will consume all of those things".
